Reports 2007 - Cyclocross

After nearly nine months of racing, the Montana cycling season came to a close Sunday in Missoula with the State Championship Cyclocross Race. The race was hosted by Northern Rockies, who put together a great event. The course was long and mostly flat. There were a few twisty technical sections, only one barrier, and a short sandy run-up. Technically, the course was quite easy, but the variety of surfaces kept it exciting, and the fast, wide-open nature of the terrain led to some great tactical racing. Despite the previous days of rain, the course was in excellent condition, with just a few slick corners and lots of puddles.

The second half of the Missoula weekend was a new course designed by John Weyrich at the Lubrecht Forest. The area, 30 miles east of Missoula, is a winter XC ski destination. The first race of the Bozeman Cyclocross Weekend took place at the community park in Big Sky, under the shadow of Lone Peak. The G.A.S./Intrinsik team organized the race, and thanks go out to Brad Morgan for putting on a great race. Conditions for the race were cloudy and cool with a brisk wind. The course was similar to last year, and featured a little bit of everything, dirt path, pavement, pasture, deep gravel, woodchips, and a popular "whoop-de-do" section. The course seemed to favor cornering skills and acceleration over raw power.

A few days of cold and snow had us thinking we might race in "standard" cyclocross conditions of mud and snow but the Montana blue sky prevailed and the course was mostly dry and fast, albeit bumpy in spots.
