Winter fun (for those who admit it) PDF Print E-mail

On Sunday Jan 31st was the Homestake Lodge winter triathlon.  For many, apparently, it was hellish.  For me, it was like they invented this silly sport just to make me happy.  The conditions were soft, which made for almost comical running and biking.  The only discipline that was true to it's traditional values was the skate skiing.  If it had been hard pack, it would have been a different story.  The runners would have kicked my butt as they usually do and John Curry would have punished me on the bike like he always does.  Wallowing in the deep snow played havoc on many people's psyche and that was probably the single most important factor in the outcome of this race.  Even though some complained, everybody was smiling when it was all said and done.  I think deep down we all had fun.  Results can be found on the Homestake Lodge events page here:

Cross Country RESULTS
Downhill RESULTS

The Lone Peak's Revenge has been a great race the past several years, and it keeps getting better.  The course is excellent and was improved this year.  More improvements to the course are in store for next year.  The vendors who supply Gallatin Alpine Sports consistently contribute extensively to the race -- resulting in excellent prizes for winners and for the raffle.  This year, post-race food was provided by the Big Sky Thai restaurant Lotus Pad.  It was so good!!  Free beer, too!!  And music on the lawn patio at the base of the hill.

So . . . if you missed it this year, make a mental note to go to this race next year.  It is one of the best races in MT -- very similar to the Bohart Bash in terms of excellent course and festive atmosphere.

Two events this Saturday with a connection to the G.A.S./Intrinsik Cycling Team:

1.  XC Ski Race -- Big Sky

BSSEF, Gallatin Alpine Sports, and Lone Mountain Ranch present the 7th Annual Gallatin Glissade on Saturday, March 14, 2009.  The Gallatin Glissade is a fun, point-to-point freestyle (i.e. either skate or classic) race to benefit the Big Sky Ski Education Foundation.

On-site registration is from 7:30AM until 9:00AM.  The race fee is $35 for the 18 km and $10 for the 2 km.  Registration includes a t-shirt!

The 18 km starts at 6,900 feet at Lone Moose Meadows; the finish is at 6,200 feet at The Bunker on the Big Sky Golf Course

2.  Running Race -- Bozeman

Pub 317 has expressed interest in sponsoring the G.A.S./Intrinsik stage of the Tour de Bozeman and they've asked for us to announce their running race to the G.A.S./Intrinsik community.  It's this coming Saturday.  It ends at Pub 317, and participants get a free beer I understand, as well as a T-shirt and mug.
Junior Talent Search - Bozeman High School PDF Print E-mail

March 5th and 6th, 2009

The first state-wide Talent Search put on by the Montana Bicycle Racing Association came to Bozeman High School on March 5th and 6th 2009.  The support from the school was great, and the participation by the students was outstanding.  Almost 40 students gave the time trial a shot, with most riding their hearts out and some even exhibiting the talent to be competitive cyclists.  For more information about opportunities for juniors to get involved in cycling, including mentoring from G.A.S./Intrinsik teammates and potential access to a "bike library," contact the team at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.  In a nutshell, to conduct the Talent Search, USA Cycling elite level coach Don Russel and assistants from the G.A.S./Intrinsik Cycling team put interested students through a moderate-length time trial (just under 20 minutes, typically) on a virtual course shown on a screen, using a computerized resistance device that continuously measures the power output by the student.  The top male and female students shared $200 in gift certificate from team co-title sponsor Gallatin Alpine Sports and became eligible for the state-wide prize of $150 each for the fastest male and female.
