June 21 was the annual Wulfman 14km trail race on the CDT. The promoter is Butte’s running club, the Piss & Moan Runners. This race runs the CDT from Homestake Pass to Pipestone pass. Even numbered years the course is North to South, odd numbered years it’s South to North. The start is pursuit style with runners starting directly on the single track trail every 20 seconds.

This was the 2nd time for me on this course. I did it 2 yrs ago, thus in the same direction: north to south. Last attempt for me was dreadful with a too fast start, then twisted ankle. This year I was going for a steady effort with goal time of 70 min. I camped at start night before in the iVan. I was able to sleep in, had morning coffee (not bulletproof), and a good warm-up. The weather was ideal with temp. of 45F and partly sunny skies.

I missed my start by 20 seconds due to a late pee. Initial pace was very conservative, but on track at 5min/km. We are just back from a 2 week trip to visit family in KY and the ‘7000 elevation started to take its toll as my pace slowed on the biggest climbs in the midpoint of the course. I was graining back time on the downs and flats, but not enough. The trails were in great shape with very little mud.

Final time was 73:03 for 17th overall placing and a 6min PR on the course. WMA age-graded time was 68:58 which is reachable for me in the future (on a very good day). Men’s winner in 60:55 was 18 year old XC star Adian prepping for his college season. Women’s winner in 66:06 was 44 year old evergreen Nicole Hunt, who’s age-graded time was very fast at 61:50. The awards were at Homestake Lodge which is ever expanding and looking good.
