Tracks for Trails 2013Sunday Feb 24 was the annual Gallatin Valley Land Trust fundraiser skiathlon event called Make Tracks for Trails.  The funds raised go to support the efforts of GVLT including expanding the Mountains to Main Street trail system.  This event is a three-part competition with the winning team of 4 skiers claiming the Golden Ski.

The three categories for the Golden Ski comp are total km’s skied (up to 200 for max points), total # of pledges collected and total $ funds raised.  For the past 5 years, a team (or two) of GAS/Intrinsik racers has participated and finished no lower than 2nd.  We won the Golden Ski in 2011 and 2009.  In past years, our hottest competition usually comes from the BWAGs (Bozeman Women’s Activity Group).  This year the GAS team was Alex Lussier, Rob Knapp, Seb White and, stand-in athlete, Sandy Knapp.  GAS/Intrinsik skiers Bill Cochran and Amy QQlow were also there.

The venue for 2013 was different with a change from Bohart Ranch to the Lindley Center.  The skiing was on the town trails of lower Lindley and upper Highland.  Personally, I was a bit bummed about no Bohart Ranch this year considering the incredible year they are having up there. The conditions in town ended up being absolutely stellar with an overnight low temp. of 15F, light snow and clearing skies.  The track was groomed very well and we started on our classic skis.

The air temp stayed cool despite the bright sun and we kept the classic gear on all day.  A little touch of the TOKO yellow grip wax was giving us great kick.  Alex skied 60kms and maybe a few more.  Rob did 50kms with a few stops to let Panda out.  As expected there were lots of kms skied by the defending Equinox 24hr champion and 2012 finisher in the 90km North Routt Coureur Des Bois ski ultramarathon (respectively).  I did 42kms with an extended break in the middle to help Willy make a few tracks for trails.  Our funds raised were up there at $2300 and so was our total # of pledges, but the final tally left us in 2nd place, again.  3rd this year was Rockford Coffee cycling.  1st place was the BMAGs (these guys are the husbands of the BWAGs).

It was a great day out.  Thank you to everyone who gave us a pledge this year.  Enjoy the trails!
