Saturday, January 28th, was the 30th annual OSCR ski race.  This event is a 50km skate ski marathon covering one loop that starts and finishes on the Seeley Lake (MT) nordic ski trails.  The first 9kms are on the twisting trails of the area's west perimeter.  Racers then leave the nordic area and begin the 38km trek out and over Rice Ridge on well-traveled snow mobile trails.  The final 3kms are on the nordic area's eastern perimeter to complete the loop.   The conditions were excellent.  The overnight low temp. was 10F and the temp. at 10am race start was 15F.  Skies were partly cloudy, there were a few snow flakes falling and the trails were in great shape.  Seeley Lake looks to be having a good snow year, which was very refreshing coming from dry and warm Bozeman.  GAS / Intrinsik nordic racers Rob Knapp and Seb White were present to take part.

The starting line was filled with many of the Western Montana endurance athletes including those from Missoula and Flathead.  The start was fast and furious with one quick crash and a split pole in the first km.  The crash caused a gap to form and a group of 8 racers were up the trail.   I settled into the second group with Doug Shyrock and others.  Rob was conserving his energy for the climb of Rice Ridge.   I decided to skip the first aid station and get a gap on the group as the big climb started.  By the top, the cramp was just starting and, as the descent started, the CRAMP was in full stitch.   On the long, gradual descent off the ridge, I was unable to race and switched into survival mode, stopping a few times to stretch my cramping quads.  I ended up at 3:08 for 18th place (unofficial).  Next time, more electrolytes.  Rob finished in 3:27 (unofficial).  This was Rob's first OSCR and his comments were "that WAS a huge climb" and "what an amazing race!"  The winning time was 2:41.  Helena's Randy Beckner was second overall in the sprint finish.  It was a fantastic day out and I am already looking forward to this event in 2013.  I will post full results and photos soon.  Next weekend, GAS / intrinsik nordic will be racing the Boulder Mtn Tour in Sun Valley.
