March 12 was the 9th annual Gallatin Glissade Nordic ski race at Lone Mountian Ranch in Big Sky.   This event is a point-to-point freestyle Nordic race that starts at Lone Moose Meadows and finishes at the Big Sky Golf Course.  There is a total of 720” elevation loss over 20km.  GAS/Intrinsik racers Brian Frykman (cat.2), Guy McKenzie (cat. 4), Seb White (cat. 3) and the estranged Alex Hassman (mtn Cat 1) were present to take part.  Missing was Tom Owen (mtn Cat 1) who was in route back from Masters Nordic World Championships in British Columbia. Temperature was 23 at the start, the sun was shining and the trails were groomed to perfection.

The race started fast with a double pole in the 5 starting classic tracks.  There was a short rise, over a bridge and we were heading swiftly down the North Fork Trail for 4km.  From the gun, MSU Nordic racer Michael Schallinger led the pack.  He was followed by Big Sky local Dan Cantrell, Livingston’s Doug Wadle (2:47 @ OSCR this year), Brian and Seb.  That was the leading 5 until the finish.

As we entered the twisting trails approaching the Ranch, Michael attacked into the turns, while Dan tried to stay with him.  Doug was in 3rd and lost contact with Dan, then surrendered that gap to Brian.  Brian led our trio for 2 kms.  I came around Doug and then around Brian as we started the 2km climb up through the Ranch.  Near the top of the climb, Doug bridged up to me and pulled through.  Brian was steady back in 5th. Michael and Dan were not in sight.

The race started to descend to the Golf Course.  I was sitting in Doug’s draft as the trail leveled out.  Brian bridged to us and we raced hard until the finish.  A podium place was at stake for the winner of our trio.  Doug led most of the final kms, with Brian pulling through hard in the classic track at 18km.  Doug marked Brian and I tried to come around.  I did not attack with gusto and Doug was right there.  We rounded the final turn with Doug in the lead.  Doug kept up the tempo and got the 3rd placing.  I was 4th and Brian 5th.  Alex came 6th.   Michael won with a fast time of 40:46.

This is an excellent event.  I am excited to race it again next year.  Thanks to Gallatin Alpine Sports and Lone Mountain Ranch for making it happen.
