The GAS/Intrinsik team sent six of its best to do battle in the Pro/1/2 field at the Elkhorn Classic Stage Race in Baker City, OR.  Flying the orange and white were Lussier, Morgan, Wiedenheft, Curry, Frykman, and Lipp.  Showing up as relative unknowns, the team took an active role in the race and mixed it up with some of the best teams in the region.  Frykman arrived fit and ready to fight for the general classification after a winter and spring of relentless and focused training specifically for this race.  The team was eager to back him up and the result was an excellent 5th place overall for Frykman.

Some highlights from the weekend:

  • Awesome race hotel with direct courtyard and pool access.
  • Unlimited espresso thanks to Frykmans’ Jura.
  • Curry and Frykman make the selection over the big climb in stage 1.  Curry takes 5th on the stage.
  • Six sweaty guys enjoying post-race bagels with nutella in the back of a minivan.
  • Creative use of hotel room objects to raise front wheel for trainer warm-up.
  • Frykman time trials at 30mph, moves into top 5 on GC.
  • Blake’s anatomically incorrect skinsuit number pinning dummy.
  • Scott “Simmons” Lipp’s pre-race meal of red white and blue cookies and fried chicken.
  • Pre-crit team viewing of “Transformers” to get psyched!!
  • Brad’s front tire blows out in a corner at 28mph in the crit.  Brad puts a foot down and manages to keep it upright, grinding off half his cleat in the process.  Nice save!
  • Curry goes for broke at the start of a rainy 102 mile stage 4 and bridges up to the early breakaway, then implodes in spectacular fashion.
  • During stage 4 the peleton stops for a nature break.  Frykman proceeds to take the world’s longest pee, while the peleton disappears up the road.  Luckily his trusty teammates are there to help him chase back on.
  • Brian Williams from NRO returns the favor from last weekend, and helps chase the breakaway on the final stage.  Classy move!
  • After nearly 100 miles of racing, Frykman throws down big watts up the 8 mile finishing climb to take 6th on the stage and secure 5th place GC.
  • Bozeman ladies Amy Frykman and Patricia Dowd take 3rd place in their respective Pro/1/2 and Cat 3 fields.
  • “Bear Killer” Morgan just about nails a grizzly bear at 2AM with the minivan.  Nice save part II.
